A ship sails and I stand watching 'til she fades away on the horizon, and someone at my side says:
"She is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large as when I saw
her. The diminished size, and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at that moment
when someone at my side says "She is gone," there are others who are watching her coming,
and other voices take up a glad shout "There she comes!", and this is dying.
Let the light of the late afternoon shine through the chinks of the barn,
moving up the bales as the sun moves down.
Let the crickets take up the chafing as a woman takes up
her needles and yarn.
Let the evening come...
Let the fox go back to the sandy den. Let the wind die down.
Let the shed go black inside.
Let the evening come...
Let the bottlefly in the ditch, to the scoop in the oats, to air in the lung.
Let the evening come...
Let dew collect on the abandoned tools in long grass.
Let the stars appear and the moon disclose her silver horn.
Let it come, as it will, and don't be afraid. God does not leave
us comfortless, so let the evening come...
